| Visit NEWater Visitor Centre and you will learn about water and especially NEWater. Get to meet their virtual guide "Wave" whom will guide you through the Centre. Be edutained with multimedia presentations and computer interactives.
You will also get to see a NEWater factory that is incorporated in the Centre. You will be able to witness at first hand the operation of advanced membrane and ultraviolet technologies in the production of NEWater.
NEWater Visitor Centre was officially opened by Prime Minister Mr. Goh Chok Tong at the Launch of NEWater on 21st February 2003.
Singapore's first water masterplan was drawn up in 1972. In 1974, PUB, the national water agency, built a pilot plant to turn used water into potable water. This was the precursor of today's NEWater factories. But it was ahead of its time. The costs were astronomical and the membranes were unreliable, so the idea was shelved to await further technological advancement.
In 1998, the necessary technology had matured and driven production costs down. In May 2000, the first NEWater plant was completed.
On 4 May 2002, PUB was awarded the prestigious Award of Excellence from the National Water Research Institute (NWRI), USA. The Award was for the NEWater Demonstration Plant Project and in recognition of PUB's outstanding contributions to microfiltration technology in the water industry. NWRI is a prestigious water research institute based in USA to promote the protection, maintenance, and restoration of water supplies and aquatic environments through the development of cooperative research work.
Currently, there are four NEWater plants in Singapore. The fifth NEWater plant at Changi will be Singapore's largest NEWater plant. NEWater will meet about 30 percent of Singapore's total water demand by 2010.
