Chek Jawa (仄爪哇) is a teeming haven for marine life located at the eastern tip of the island at Pulau Ubin. There, you can spot a variety of starfish, anemones, octopi and other sea creatures that inhabit the sand and mud flats. A unique natural environment that is unusually rich in biodiversity.

Chek Jawa's is rare and has an identity and character of its own - it reveals and transforms itself into a natural WETwonderLAND during low tide. When the tide comes in, it is fully submerged—its secrets and treasures are again hidden, waiting yet to be discovered another day.

Chek Jawa was first brought to public attention in the middle of 2001. The Ministry of National Development has decided to defer the reclamation works at Tanjung Chek Jawa, originally slated in 1992. Chek Jawa would be kept in its natural state for as long as it was not needed for development.

After carefully considering all public submissions and extensive consultations with scientific experts and relevant government agencies, it was announced in 2001 that reclamation works would be deferred as long as Pulau Ubin is not required for development. New amenities at Chek Jawa Wetlands, Pulau Ubin have been opened to the public from Sunday, 8 July 2007, which will allow visitors to conduct their own DIY tour of Chek Jawa every day of the week.

Chek Jawa is actually a collection of six distinct habitats - coastal forest, mangrove, sandy beach, sand and mud flats, coral rubble and a tiny island called Pulau Sekudu, or Frog Island. It is unique because all these different habitats are clustered in an area just one sq km in size.

Back then, you may be greeted by a wild boar by the name of Priscilla when you visit Chek Jawa. She was neither pet nor wild pig and was hand-raised. The gentle Priscilla passed away on 27 May 2004.

In 2007, the boardwalk at Chek Jawa was launched. Facilities include a visitor centre at House No. 1 with a viewing jetty, a 1.1 km boardwalk (Mangrove and Coastal Loops), and the 20 m Jejawi Tower with a panoramic view of the surroundings.

Guided Tours at Chek Jawa - The intertidal flats at Chek Jawa Wetlands are most suitable for visiting during low tides of 0.5 metres and below. Their nature guides will be at hand to bring you on a one-hour tour to experience Chek Jawa's amazing natural heritage. Click here for more info.
