| The National Archives of Singapore documents the diversity, richness and historical development of our country, its people and its institutions. Its rich archival holdings date back to the early 1800s.
This building zwere originally part of the Anglo-Chinese Primary School compound (including the Singapore Philatelic Museum beside National Archives of Singapore) that occupied the site from the late 19th century until 1993. Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham founded the school in 1886 at 70 Amoy Street until land was obtained at the foot of Fort Canning.
Today what was once the main school building is the home of the National Archives of Singapore (NAS), the official custodian of Singapore's historical records. Founded in 1968, the NAS was first housed in the National Library along Stamford Road, then at Fort Canning Hill (at Lewin Terrace) for 13 years, and then at the Old Hill Street Police Station in 1980. The move into this permanent home came in 1997 after a complete restoration and refitting of the building. Official opening by BG George Yeo, Minister for Information & The Arts on 30 April 1998.
Initiated by Dr F R J Verhoeven, an UNESCO expert in archives administration assigned to the National Library to survey the archives and records in Singapore government departments and statutory boards, NAS was first known as the National Archives and Records Centre (NARC). In 1979, with the addition of the Oral History Department, the National Archives was renamed the National Archives and Oral History Department (the latter was subsumed under the Heritage Services Division in 2001).
When the National Heritage Board (NHB) was established under the NHB Act in 1993, NAS became an institution under it.
Don't miss the Foundation Stone of the Monument (picture right) near the entrance in tribute to 'The Early Founders of Singapore' which was laid by Inche Yusof Bin Ishak, The President of the Republic of Singapore, on the 18th Day of January, 1970.
