Mr. J. T. Thomson was one of Singapore's pioneer engineers. In the 1840s, Thomson was employed by the British East India Company to be a surveyor. He built bridges, roads and other public works such as Hajjah Fatimah Mosque and the Tan Tock Seng hospital at Serangoon Road. His outstanding achievement was the erection of the Horsburgh Lighthouse on Pedra Branca. Today's Thomson Road is named after him in tribute.

Field Marshal Count Terauchi was Commander of the Japanese Southern Army in Saigon. After the British Surrender in February 1942 Terauchi occupied Government House (Istana). In September 1945, Terauchi was too ill to surrender personally to Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Commander, South-East Asia Command, at Municipal Building (City Hall). Terauchi, however, sent his sword. Terauchi was placed under house arrest in Johore Bahru where he died in 1946. He was cremated and his ashes were buried in The Japanese Cemetery Park.

Founded by Philip Robinson and James Gaborian Spicer as Spicer and Robinson in 1858. Robinson & Co. survived 2 World Wars, The Great Depression and other crisis to become the leading fashion retailer in Singapore. A big fire in November 1972 destroyed Robinsons at Raffles Place and they moved to Specialists' Centre, Orchard Road (Singapore's busiest and only shopping district then). In June 1983, Robinsons relocated to The Centrepoint Shopping Centre. In March 2001, the second Robinsons store was opened at Raffles City Shopping Centre. Today, 2009, The Robinson Group manages eight retail entities that trade under the following brands - Robinsons, John Little, Marks & Spencer, Principles, Trucco, Coast, River Island and Fat Face.

The Serangoon Walkabout has two parts. The journey will be slightly longer if you continue with the second part. Click here to download The Serangoon Walkabout guide. Hope you enjoy it.
